5 scriptures to meditate on during your yoga practice

Incorporating the word of God into your flow

When it comes to any activity we do, it can be easy to let our minds wander. While that can sometimes be good for creativity and forming new ideas, sometimes we need direction. This can be especially true when we’re moving our bodies, whether going on solo walks, lifting weights, or even practicing yoga.

As Christians, we want these things to honor God. So, how do we welcome God into spaces like our yoga practices? We can take a note from David on this one: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer” (Psalm 19:14).

We should focus our minds on Christ and His word in everything we do, including our yoga practices. Need some inspiration? Here are five Bible passages to meditate on during your yoga practice:

1. Psalm 23:1–2: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.”

Really this entire Davidic psalm is a great one to meditate on, but you can also pick just a verse or two (like we did here) to focus on during your flow.

2. Romans 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

3. Philippians 4:8: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

4. Habakkuk 3:17–19: “Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. GOD, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s; he makes me tread on my high places.”

5. Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

There are several ways to meditate on God’s Word during your practice:

  • You can simply start your yoga practice by reading a verse or passage aloud.

  • You can repeat the verses to yourself through a breath prayer by attaching a portion of the verse(s) to your inhale and exhale.

  • You can also find song versions of some Bible verses that might help you memorize Scripture, and that you can play during your yoga practice so you’re actively surrounded by God’s Word. (We recently found Verses on Spotify who partners with Christian artists to make song versions of popular Bible verses.)

Surrounding ourselves with Scripture helps us to grow closer to Jesus and to see Him more clearly. And yes – that can even be on your yoga mat!
